House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gives 8-hour speech on immigration

Nancy Pelosi has been telling DREAMer stories for 7 hours. And she's still talking

Her speech came as Senators prepare to vote on a budget agreement negotiated by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that will increase federal spending by about $400 billion over two years.

Rep. Pelosi delivered an 8-hour record-breaking House floor speech on Thursday about "dreamers" ahead of a vote on a long-term budget deal. Mrs Pelosi said her support for a new bill-a $300bn spending deal cut by Democrats and Republicans in the Senate-was dependent upon Mr Ryan promising a vote to save the Dreamers. "But on Nancy Pelosi's terms, that is not going to happen, no matter how long she stands on the House floor and speaks".

She read comments from young people asking for immigration action along with her own commentary as if she were having a direct conversation with the Dreamers: "You are so right, Josephine", Pelosi said. In fact, scores of Indian Dreamers began gathering on Capitol Hill on Thursday to draw attention to the plight of legal high-skilled immigrants stuck in decades long employment based green card backlog.

Senate lawmakers are preparing for an open floor debate on immigration sometime next week, which McConnell has promised will result in some kind of final DACA package.

She spent much of her talk reading letters from Dreamers - undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children - whose protection from deportation is set to expire next month. "We've laid out what we would like to see in immigration legislation, and I think it's something that Nancy Pelosi should support", Sanders said. Boehner took to the floor to make a political point because as the minority leader he had little power to hold up the legislation he opposed.

Speaker Paul Ryan still maintains that he will not hold a debate or vote on immigration reform within the House unless the discussed plan is approved by the president.

The mood in the House was in stark contrast to the comity in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic leader Chuck Schumer delivered laudatory back-to-back speeches on the accord, which would add almost $300 billion for government programs and suspend the debt ceiling until March 2019. "After election day I wondered if this dream would soon end, it's been a hard reality check that privileges could be taken away", her letter said.

Representative Steve King of Iowa, whose notoriety is precisely calibrated to his bigotry, speaks as crudely as he wants without fear of censure from Republican leaders.

House Democrats repeatedly voted against short-term-spending bills that did not include protections for people in the program. For eight hours and seven minutes, Pelosi would not allow her voice to be silenced and, in doing so, allowed the voice of 700,000 DACA recipients to be heard within the chamber.

As Ms Pelosi wrapped up, she received a standing ovation from the Democrats.

Not even the slightest lift of a heel to give her feet some much-needed respite.

But the budget deal will need significant Democratic support in order to pass in the House.
