The company says its launch of 1,280 drones for the pre-recording broke a Guinness World record for "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.". Intel also adds that it will be putting on a live 300-drone show each evening of the Olympics for the day's medal ceremony.

A new world record was set during the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, as 1,218 drones formed a giant snowboarder in the air above Pyeongchang, and morphed into the Olympic rings.

Here's what the opening ceremonies were supposed to look like live.

"Due to impromptu logistical changes it did not proceed", an International Olympic Committee spokesman told Reuters with elaborating further.

Intel, which received heaps of attention for using their Shooting Star drones to put on a show at the 2017 Super Bowl as part of Lady Gaga's halftime performance, had been working for several months on the Olympics performance. "We knew we'd need to understand the wind - it's very windy up here, and we had to understand the impact of the (cold) temperature". That successful show was what USA viewers saw Friday night on NBC's delayed broadcast of the opening ceremony.

Per a report in Wired, while the scale of this year's show is certainly impressive, from a software perspective, it's more or less the same logistics as running smaller, 300-drone shows. The performance also surpassed the 300-drone salute that was pre-recorded with Lady Gaga for Super Bowl LI previous year. Instead, it was pre-recorded last December for broadcast during the event. What an wonderful way to display just how far drone technology has come in the last few years.

"Since fireworks in the seventh or eighth century, there has been no alternative option", Anil Nanduri, the vice president and general manager of Intel's drone division, told AdWeek. It was unclear whether the logistical changes that sidelined the drone show was due to these systems issues.
