Black apparently shot an intruder in his home, according to information released by Aurora police, then was himself shot by an officer responding to multiple reports of a disturbance in the area. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On Saturday night, officers shot and killed a man who drove toward them, hitting several of their vehicles.

Police fatally shot an armed homeowner in Aurora, Colorado, just after the homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Monday morning, the Denver Post reported.

The APD is investigating the shooting with other law enforcement agencies, including the Denver Police Department, and has so far released few details. He is suspected of causing "serious, but non-life-threatening injuries" to a child in the home before Black shot him, officials said.

The flurry of emergency calls went out to the Aurora Police Department yesterday, advising authorities that there was something wrong on a tree-lined street in the Colorado city.

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The armed man, however, was identified as Richard "Gary" Black Jr.by Siddhartha Rathod, a lawyer representing his family's estate.

Officers then confronted an armed man and shot him to death. 'We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time'. One neighbor, Brad Maestas, described him as a "family man" and a "grandpa that was protecting his family".

An investigation is ongoing.

Findings will be turned over to the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed against any involved person, the office said in a release.

The shooting marked the second deadly encounter involving Aurora police in three days.
