On Wednesday, the election commission announced that the ruling ZANU-PF had taken majority of the seats in parliament, winning 109 out of 210 seats with 41 going to the opposition MDC and 58 yet to be allocated.

The MDC opposition alliance insist their candidate, Nelson Chamisa, beat the incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Ballots are still being counted in the presidential election with results expected to be announced later this week.

Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF party won the majority of seats in parliament after sweeping rural constituencies by huge margins, official results showed on Wednesday.

Earlier today, Zwnews reporters witnessed soldiers shooting civilians in Harare during an MDC Alliance protests against election results.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday said he wanted an independent investigation into the killings, and that he is seeking settle differences "peacefully".

Members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party are claiming that the elections have been rigged. The electoral commission says the vote was credible.

Observers say it could be a tight race, but the opposition has said it will protest if their candidate is defeated.

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) praised the electoral commission for using biometric kits to register voters, saying it reduced the possibility of multiple voting.

The leader of the opposition, Nelson Chamisa, tweeted that he had "won".

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the unfortunate deaths of three people during the riots and melee which occurred in Harare Central business district", police spokeswoman Charity Charamba told state television. "We won the popular vote & will defend it!"

Before the violence, EU Chief Observer Elmar Brok said he did not yet know if the shortcomings would have a material effect on the outcome of the vote, but criticised the electoral commission for being at times "one-sided".

Mugabe had ruled the country since gaining independence from Britain in 1980.

"I believe that the parliamentary results were released first as a psychological ploy to dampen opposition expectations regarding the presidential vote", Prof.

Mahama urges the prompt release of presidential results from Monday's election, saying delays will increase speculation that results were manipulated.

A presidential poll will be held on Saturday, September 8, if a candidate does not secure more than 50% of the vote, but it will probably take a couple of days before the results of the presidential poll are declared.
