Stuart Broad celebrates with Joe Root

Joe Root's men seemed to be edging their rivals but Kohli has them back in the game.

Early on day 2, Sam Curran's wicket was taken by Mohammed Shammi to end England's innings at 287 runs. This saw India move from 182/8 to an eventual 274 when Kohli was last out for 149.

Kohli opened his shoulders late in his knock and finished with a total of 22 fours and a six off his penultimate ball as he successfully hogged the strike to demonstrate his excellent game management.

The first of three wickets to fall for eight runs as he side slipped 3-216, Root's misfortune was accompanied by a full-house "send-off" from his opposite number Virat Kohli.

Under cloudy skies, on a damp pitch and against a moving ball, Indian captain Virat Kohli played perhaps his best Test innings his bright career so far.

Kohli was one of two players, along with David Warner, to record twin centuries in that Adelaide Test. They needed some inspiration to get out of the rut and Virat Kohli stepped up to the task.

Kohli celebrated the dismissal with a "mic drop" gesture, pretending to drop an imaginary microphone, just as Root had done a month earlier when he clinched the one-day worldwide series with a second successive hundred.

The visitors suffered some early blows in their reply to England's modest first innings total of 287.

Kambli recalled one of his ODI centuries back in 1996 and found similarities with the kind of celebration Kohli did on Thursday.

Jos Buttler, meanwhile, was back at the ground after the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that he had gone to hospital during the lunch interval to have an X-ray on his left middle finger.

He did not fish too much with deliveries outside the off stump as the fans were treated to a great contest between Jimmy Anderson (22-41-2) and Kohli.

Curran, in only his second Test, bowled intelligently to disrupt India's top order and expose their weaknesses in these conditions. KL Rahul (4) and Shikhar Dhawan were also dismissed in a matter of few balls by Curran as the match suddenly changed directions with India being 59 for 3.

But the introduction of Curran turned the tide in England's favour. He stitched together a 48-run partnership with Pandya and then 21 for the seventh wicket.
