The captured mosquitoes are sent to Harrisburg, where they're liquefied and then tested for West Nile Virus, an infection that first came to Pennsylvania in 2000 and typically comes with flu-like symptoms, but in rare cases can result in death.

Dr. Garvey says that, until the state's first hard frost, whether it's for work or play, being outside means there's a risk for West Nile virus.

"We advise everyone to take the appropriate precautions no matter what ZIP Code you live in", she said, in a statement. Up to 80 percent of people infected with West Nile virus will have no symptoms and will recover on their own.

There are no reported human cases at this time.

Mild symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, tiredness and swollen lymph glands and can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Some severe symptoms are common in old adults or persons with a weak immune system.

Over 2000 patients from the United States were reported to be infected by the West Nile virus a year ago, with a death toll of 121 people.

To combat the risk of infection, residents are advised to use mosquito repellent, wear long trousers and sleeves to cover exposed skin, and avoid areas where mosquitoes congregate. Other repellents containing picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol are also effective against mosquitoes. Information about insect repellents can be found by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html. Researchers have tallied a record 2,143 pools of West Nile-positive mosquitoes statewide.

"In recent years, when one human case occurs in an area, other cases often follow in the same part of the county", Fairfax officials said.
