Other photos showed water rushing Thursday night over the dam and Lakeside Drive, which separates College Lake and Blackwater Creek.

A failure of the College Lake Dam near Lynchburg could flood the city with five metres of water in seven minutes, news outlets reported Thursday evening, citing statements from the National Weather Service (NSW).

"Although water levels have decreased, the threat for dam failure continues", and emergency personnel will check for signs of structural failure, the agency said.

Local fire and police used boats to rescue people. A flash flood watch remains in effect for much of central and western Virginia, while central Lynchburg is under a flash flood warning.

Lynchburg, Virginia, is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 50 miles from Roanoke.

Officials say people who were evacuated may not be able to return to their homes for at least 24 hours, WDBJ reports.

Some 124 homes in Lynchburg, Va., are under evacuation orders with intense flooding in the region.

The city of Lynchburg in the U.S. state of Virginia has seen torrential rain and severe weather in recent days.

The dam at College Lake, adjacent to the University of Lynchburg, was built in 1934, according to the school's website.

Since 2014, the City Council has been considering options for repairing or replacing the dam.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation listed College Lake Dam as being "high hazard" in 2011, estimating at the time that it would cost $4.5 million to fix.

There is some good news in the forecast: Following two weeks of relentlessly wet weather in the eastern US, a drier weather pattern will move in over the weekend and into early next week, AccuWeather said.

Evacuees from the Sandusky Apartments are being taken to the Salvation Army, the City of Lynchburg said in a Facebook post. The area impacted would be the city of Lynchburg, which is one mile downstream from the dam.
