During the interview, James said conversations about race had "taken over" in part because "our president is kind of trying to divide us".

He also said he might consider running for office if someone said to him he was the only person and that Trump would win if he didn't step up. "It's always been something that brings someone together". James was on Lemon's show to discuss the opening of his I Promise school for at-risk children in Akron, Ohio.

Donald Trump took a shot at LeBron James on Twitter Friday night.

Trump's offhand Twitter dig came in response to an interview between James and CNN's Don Lemon, which focused on an ambitious new public school James has founded in Akron. Now he is referring to CNN's Don Lemon as the "dumbest man on television", while also claiming that it "isn't easy to" make Lebron look smart. I like Mike!' Trump posted on Friday evening.

Trump's tweet on Saturday was swiftly condemned by many on social media, including Dan Rather, the former CBS News anchor, who said the president's words were racist.

While LeBron James is staying out of the fray and not responding to Donald Trump's insult, many of his supporters are showing their love for LeBron and his mission by making donations to the school.

James has been critical of Trump on multiple occasions, and has supported players who've opted out of visiting the White House during the Trump presidency. He has continued to attack the players, who are protesting racial inequality and police brutality, tweeting in July that the "NFL National Anthem Debate is alive and well again".

Trump's timing is curious to say the least considering the fact that James' CNN interview was not the first time he voiced his displeasure at Trump's leadership.

"If we look at some of the greatest leaders of our time, you look at, you know, Muhammad Ali, you look at Dr. Martin Luther King, and all the adversity they went through", he told Lemon.

James opted out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this offseason and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.
