As a reminder, that meeting brought together the president's son Donald Trump Jr., his son-in-law Jared Kushner, the president's then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort with a Russian lawyer named Natalia Veselnitskaya and others. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. "I did not know about it!"

Trump's tweet, however, conflicts with a statement that Trump Jr. released to the New York Times in July 2017, as the newspaper prepared to report about the meeting.

The tweet was not the only time the President has tweeted on the topic, but it does come at a time when the President is increasingly anxious about special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and how it may impact him and his family.

President Trump doubled down on his stance, proffered previous year, that pursuing damaging information on Hillary Clinton was the focus of a questionable 2016 meeting between his son Donald Trump Jr. and a lawyer with ties to the Kremlin.

But on Sunday, Trump tweeted the meeting discussed information and getting dirt on his election opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Trump railed again Sunday about Mueller's probe, calling it "the most one sided Witch Hunt in the history of our country. Then it was revealed in June that Trump's lawyers had admitted to Mueller in a letter sent last January that Trump had actually "dictated" the statement". As noted above, receiving an in-kind donation from a foreigner is against federal law. Opposition research on Hillary Clinton?

However, legal experts say that Mr Trump Jr could fall foul of campaign finance laws, which prohibit accepting anything of value from a foreign government or foreign national.

But, he added that in order for Americans to fully understand the truth, the investigation must play out and not be shut down.

Both President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have said Russia did not interfere in the United States election.

On what is wrong with this meeting: My problem with all of this, it takes me back to the Clinton years, my problem is okay he may not have committed any crimes that's fine and if he hasn't we should say that.

Democrats hammered away at the president's admission. "None of this is normal or credible", Mr. Schiff tweeted.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to see the Mueller investigation shut down.

Meanwhile, Trump has been told by aides and lawyers to stop tweeting because he's he's setting himself up for a disaster. In any event, participants in the meeting, including Veselnitskaya, said no reports about Clinton were exchanged.

Whatever his explanation, Trump has consistently said he didn't know about the Trump Tower meeting. Dowd subsequently resigned from the Trump team. "I did not know about it!" the president tweeted Sunday morning. They purposely cause great division & distrust. But also, they didn't give us anything good, and we didn't act on it.

On Monday, ABC News chief legal analyst Dan Abrams warned that Trump's tweet could preview legal trouble for Junior.

Trump was joined for his Saturday rally in OH by former White House communications director Hope Hicks, who departed the administration earlier this year.

Trump has long told his lawyers that he is willing to be interviewed and would like to sit with Mueller to hasten the inquiry's conclusion.

Multiple White House officials have been interviewed while still working at the White House and have remained in contact with the president.
