The herbicide glyphosate, which has been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization, was found in 43 of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats, the nonprofit Environmental Working Group found.

The study says that the herbicide was even found in a few organic products. While five of these contained glyphosate, none were above the group's health benchmark of 160 ppb.

Last week's California court decision awarding $289 million in damages to a dying man who claims Monsanto's Roundup weed killer gave him cancer rocked the agritech industry.

"This is the most widely used pesticide in the country", said Bill Walker, Vice-President of the Environmental Working Group.

"With this additional children's health safety factor, EWG calculated that a one-in-a-million cancer risk would be posed by ingestion of 0.01 milligrams of glyphosate per day", the group said. However the FDA has not yet released any official results. "At this point I don't know that we know to what extent or how much anybody would have to eat in order to have harm occur". Lowry says even organic products can contain pesticides.

In a statement to FOX Business regarding the report, a General Mills' spokesperson says, "Our products are safe and without questions they meet regulatory safety levels".

Dr. Lowry heads the council on environmental health for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The trader also referred to a report published today in the German economic daily Wirtschaftswoche, according to which Monsanto is also threatened with other million penalties in the United States because of the weed killer Dicamba.

We expect better from General Mills and Quaker Oats, and we will continue to urge consumers to express their preference with their pocketbooks.

The World Health Organization's cancer research agency classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans" in 2015. The use of glyphosate on base crops means it gets transferred in the food chain and lands up on our table in the form of bread, popcorn, oat flakes, etc.

It is especially disappointing because these two multi-billion dollar companies can take the simple step of telling their oat farmers to stop using glyphosate as a harvest-time desiccant on their crops. "Monsanto said it is aware of about 5,200 cases where plaintiffs claim that they have been exposed to glyphosate-based products", one trader in Frankfurt told EURACTIV on condition of anonymity. In 2017, California listed glyphosate in its Proposition 65 registry of chemicals known to cause cancer. Glyphosate is the world's most common weedkiller. Once the oats are transported to us, we put them through our rigorous process that thoroughly cleanses them (de-hulled, cleaned, roasted and flaked).

He said many banks had lowered their price target for the Bayer shares at the start of the week because they fear more legal suits.

"We don't think it does enough in particular to protect children", Faber said. "Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are significantly below any limits and well within compliance of the safety standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Commission as safe for human consumption".
