Tropical Storm Florence developing in Atlantic

Potential Tropical Cyclone 6 is forecast to strengthen to Tropical Storm Florence on Friday and then a hurricane by Sunday morning.

Strong upper-level winds are expected to prevent any significant development of the system, with the chances of storm formation only 10 percent. Both tropical storms Debby and Ernesto formed well off-shore in early August, only affecting trade routes located within the north Atlantic. We are not anticipating any impacts for us, or the USA, but shifts in the forecast track are certainly possible. Moisture from the tropical wave south of Florida will increase beginning tomorrow afternoon.

The storm will bring tropical storm conditions to the Cape Verde Islands as it moves over the open Atlantic.

National Hurricane Center forecasters predicted Thursday a swirl of thunderstorms hundreds of miles east-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands would become Tropical Storm Florence before building to hurricane strength by Sunday.

It brought with it wave heights of 17.81 metres, top gusts of 191 km/h and sustained winds (10-minute mean) of 111km/h when it hit the country in October.

The wave is moving west, northwest "with showers typical of September", said senior hurricane specialist Lixion Avila from the National Hurricane Center on Saturday morning.

A tropical wave across moving across South Florida will allow clouds to increase throughout the day.

Avila said there is a 40 percent chance that the wave could form into a depression in the central Gulf of Mexico, sometime after the weekend. But it's also a time of year when the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season nears - and it's starting to show.

Stay tuned to Space Coast Daily this Labor Day weekend for information regarding these tropical systems and your local forecasts.

The name after Florence is Gordon.
