US President Donald Trump has accused Attorney General Jeff Sessions of damaging the midterm re-election chances of two Republican members of Congress by prosecuting them. "Two easy wins now in doubt", Trump tweeted. Some, like Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) spoke out against Trump by reminding him that the United States does not decide whom to charge based on their party, but CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin went so far as to say the tweet could be enough for impeachment.

The two first Republicans to endorse Trump in the Republican presidential primaries were indicted on separate charges - Rep. Duncan Hunter of California for spending campaign funds for personal expenses and Rep. Chris Collins of NY on insider trading.

In a second tweet, Trump said Democrats "must love" Sessions and likened the situation to Democrats support for former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired past year.

That has left the attorney general's position seeming tenuous at best, though Trump recently told Bloomberg News that Sessions was safe, at least until after the November mid-term elections. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting - UNTIL I FIRED HIM! "So he'll force out Sessions and then find there's no one who will take the job who the Senate Republicans can support".

Trump on Sunday mounted a massive attack against Sessions, blaming him for allowing charges to be brought against two GOP congressman.

Though Trump argued that the investigations began during the Obama administration, the charges against Collins - which include securities and wire fraud - stem from actions he allegedly took past year, and the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Hunter's use of campaign funds after a referral from the Federal Election Committee.

"This tweet alone may be an impeachable offense", Toobin stated.

The president's latest attack on Sessions drew widespread criticism.

Mr Session said he "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations" in August, hours after Mr Trump had critcised him in a interview on Fox News. The White House did not immediately react. He was also under investigation by congressional ethics officials.

Trump stayed at the White House on Monday, watching television.

He later added, "The sentiment at the core of that tweet is so contrary to the mission of the Department of Justice, and it's such an insult to the decent people who work there".

Both congressmen have pleaded not guilty in their cases.
