Obviously, they do not have the votes to block this nominee but they're putting up one hell of a fight. Protesters just interrupted the opening minutes of Day Two, just as Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) brought up the arrests from Tuesday.

Republican Sen John Cornyn of Texas complained the hearing was being overtaken by "mob rule" His colleague Orrin Hatch from Utah demanded that a "loudmouth" protester who was drowning out his remarks should be removed.

Kavanaugh has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia since 2006. They said the hearings should be delayed because they haven't had time to review the documents and not all documents have been released.

Twitter users also debated whether Kavanaugh heard Guttenberg or, in the tumult surrounding the end of an hours-long hearing, was confused by the approach of a stranger who came upon him out of a crowd.

"If confirmed to the Supreme Court, I will keep an open mind in every case". With respect to Justice Kagan, I had a firsthand seat to that.

Kavanaugh's Republican supporters say he is one of the most qualified jurists ever to be considered for the nation's highest court.

Younger Democrats, such as California Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who said Kavanaugh told her that the high court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion is "settled law". That court is believed to be the second most important court in the country, after the Supreme Court.

President Trump weighed in on the hearing Tuesday, saying that it was a display of how "angry. the other side is". "We're seeing a lot of table pounding this morning", Cruz said. He has said, 'The judge's job is to interpret the law, not to make the law or make policy.' I agree, as do most of the people we represent: judges shouldn't be legislating from the bench. The Kavanaugh hearings are expected to last three to four days; it remains to be seen whether the handmaids will stay the course for the duration. They railed against the unusual vetting process by Republicans that failed to include documents from three years Kavanaugh worked in the Bush administration, and 100,000 more pages withheld by the Trump White House.

Kavanaugh is likely to be questioned about his views on investigating sitting presidents and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

"This is a president who has shown us consistently that he is contemptuous of the rule of law", Durbin said at Tuesday's hearing, noting Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his repeated criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "It's that President who has decided you are his man".

"I'm concerned that he won't be that person", Guttenberg said.

Kavanaugh sat patiently for almost seven hours, listening to Republican and Democrats speak for and against his joining the court before he finally got his chance to address the panel.

"First, this hearing is not about the qualifications of the nominee", he said, pointing to Kavanaugh's record as a judge.

Questioning of the nominee will begin on Wednesday, and votes in committee and on the Senate floor could occur later in September.
