Gordon has begun hurling tropical storm-force winds onshore along the Alabama and western Florida Panhandle coastline. It was moving northwest at 15 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. The National Weather Service in Mobile cautioned that the Styx River near Elsanor, Alabama, could reach moderate, and possibly major, flood stage later Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Gordon may be losing strength now that it has made landfall late Tuesday night, but there is little time to reflect as a hurricane and a pair of tropical waves bear watching in the Atlantic.

As of 5 p.m., the storm had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph — with higher gusts — and was located about 95 miles south-southeast of Mobile, Ala., and about 90 miles southeast of Beloxi, Miss.

Under its current track, the storm could move into the lower Mississippi Valley by Tuesday night and make landfall on the northern Gulf Coast later in the evening, forecasters said.

Hurricane Nate was the last hurricane to strike the US, making landfall near Biloxi, Mississippi, last October.

More than 2,000 Mississippi Power customers on the Mississippi Coast are affected by the outages.

Gordon could drop heavy rain - generally 4 to 8 inches, but as many as 12 - from Florida's western panhandle to southern Arkansas through Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain. Crews were already restoring electricity early Wednesday.

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana all declared states of emergency to better mobilize state resources and National Guard troops for the storm. As Gordon moves away from Floridas west coast, forecasters said it will pull deep tropical moisture into the region during the afternoon, producing scattered thunderstorms that will gradually dissipate later in the evening.

Airlines including Delta, Southwest and Frontier warned that delays and flight cancellations were possible at airports near the Gulf Coast because of the storm, and that they may waive fees for itinerary changes.
