Google redesigns Chrome to celebrate its 10th anniversary

That all changes with the release of version 69, targeted for September 4, which brings what Google calls its Material Design language to the web browser. The new design was based on Material Design principles. Once created, Chrome will save it and automatically sign you in to the site, so long as you are logged into your Google account on a PC, notebook, or phone.

Google says they are "rolling out" some new experiments to also "improve Chrome's startup time, latency, usage of memory, and usability". One of Google's biggest focuses in 2017 has been their push to get all of the web encrypted through SSL. A red padlock indicates if the website is secure and you'll clearly see if your data is potentially insecure.

Unfortunately, one feature that we wish Chrome would include is a built-in blocker for in-browser mining scripts.

There are some lesser glamorized under the hood tweaks that should help Google's browser continue its web leading presence such as site isolation, promotion of HTTPS secure sites, defenses against Spectre attacks and built in support of VR and AR technologies. Also, the browser will create complex, unique passwords, so you're not always using an easy to guess string of characters, such as passw0rd123.

The update definitely looks substantial, though we're sure not everyone will be a fan of the new aesthetic.

Security has also been beefed up with this latest version of Chrome. On desktop, you can see a cleaner, vertical look to the tabs that are meant to make better use of the top of the browser while keeping the tabs visible for ease of navigation.

As more sites continue to move towards using SSL certificates, instead of indicating when a site is Secure Google has made a decision to call out those that are not using a SSL certificate. With Chrome 68, HTTPS URLs were shown in green. If you're a Chrome user, this is all quite exciting. You can see the new "add shortcut" button below along with a gear icon to upload your own background images.

The new Chrome will allow more customisations like enabling shortcut creation and management from the new tab page.

On top of that, Chrome now also lets you search for a website in your Omnibox.

So you'll be able to get lavish results on celebrities, cultural events, weather info and more straight from the Omnibox. The company announced that it would be bringing a major update to the browser, featuring a new look and vast improvements to the user experience.

The Omnibox will know if you have a website already open if you're a tab hoarder with over 24 tabs open, as it will suggest for you to "Switch to tab". It will now start showing your answers directly in the address bar.

The Smart search box a.k.a Omnibox is also getting smarter.

Update 9/4/18: Removed difference in Privacy and security settings as could not reproduce again.
