She said at a news conference that the Texas Rangers were launching an independent investigation.

On September 6, 2018 at about 9:59 p.m., an off duty Dallas Police officer called police dispatch and said she was involved in a shooting at the apartments located at 1210 S. Lamar.

The police department issued a statement Saturday saying the Texas Rangers took over the case in order to "eliminate the appearance of any potential bias".

"We're still dealing in America with black people being killed in the most arbitrary ways, driving while black, walking while black, and now we have to add living while black", co-counsel Benjamin Crump said. Guyger, who had been returning home from her shift, was required to provide a blood sample for drug and alcohol testing, police said.

"I didn't know she was white until now". She opened fire on him, but so far it is not clear what their interaction was prior to the shooting, according to the Dallas police.

Hall also offered details from Thursday night's incident.

Dallas police had said previously that it's believed Guyger mistakenly went to Jean's apartment, thinking it was her own, but that's a story that has sparked outrage and disbelief on the Internet and also from Jean's family.

"We believe the fact that that has not happened yet is a reflection on deferential treatment for law enforcement officers", Merritt said.

Sammie spoke to Jean's mother and sister as they were preparing to board a plane to Dallas.

A jail employee said Guyger was released on bond. Seeing a black man inside an apartment she thought was hers influenced her actions, Merritt concluded.

"So just knowing the way that he died it seems unfair because think of the nice person that you know and the most generous person that you know and then they get shot as if they were a criminal or thief", Jessica said.

Officer Guyger was in full uniform when she encountered Jean in the apartment, according to Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall.

"The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham Jean, who has meant so very much to us", university officials said.

The man killed by a Dallas police officer at his apartment on Thursday night did not know the officer, and the officer wasn't in a picture with the victim that has been widely shared on social media, sources with direct knowledge of the investigation confirmed to WFAA on Saturday.

The Dallas Morning News reports that a vigil was held on Friday evening to honor Botham Shem Jean.

Jean's mother, Allison, suggested in an interview on Friday that her son might still be alive if he was white.

Jean was once asked to lead a college chapel service with an hymn that was unfamiliar to him, Harding University President Bruce McLarty recalled in a statement Friday. Authorities say she will be charged with manslaughter. "The very Bible says to render to Caesar that which is Caesar so if Caesar says to pay a penalty for a life, then she has to pay". The company said he was an associate in its risk assurance department.

"This is a bad tragedy", the company said in a statement. We understand the concerns of the community.
