In today's sentencing, Papadopoulos was also handed a fine of $9,500 (£7.500), 12 months of supervised release and 200 hours of community service.

The 31-year-old energy scholar, who in 2016 attempted his maiden venture into electoral politics, eventually became the first former Trump adviser to agree to cooperate with the special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.

He admitted previous year to lying to the FBI about those contacts with Russians and Russian intermediaries, false statements that prosecutors say caused irreparable harm to the investigation during its early months.

Thus began the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into Russia's election interference operation, American officials have confirmed - an investigation that was taken over by Mueller in May 2017. Trump tweeted. Senator Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has its own Russian Federation collusion investigation, applauded Mueller's work.

In late April, he also told them that Mifsud said the Russians had information that could harm Clinton, in the form of thousands of emails.

In delivering his sentence Federal Judge Randolph Moss said he did "get the sense that [Papadopoulos] does feel remorse and not simply for getting caught".

PAPADOPOULOS' attorney said Trump's efforts dwarfed his client's actions.

Prosecutors argued that Papadopoulos' repeated lies during a January 2017 interview with investigators stymied the inquiry at a critical moment.

Breen told a rapt courtroom that Papadopoulos has already faced his penalty over the past year, and realized he needed to disavow the Trump administration in favor of the truth.

He was handed a 14-day jail term as he told a court in Washington: "In January 2017, I made a bad mistake for which I paid dearly, I am ashamed".

"14 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day, No Collusion". "I made a bad mistake", he remarked.

"I am very happy with the judge".

The special counsel's office had asked for up to six months in prison.

After the Clinton emails were leaked, the Australians told U.S. intelligence counterparts what Downer had heard, spurring the Federal Bureau of Investigation to begin investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

"We don't talk politics", he said. But when pressed, Papadopoulos refused to completely shut the door on the possibility that the information made its way to other people on the campaign.

He and his wife left the courthouse without speaking to the press.

Before the sentence was read, Papadopoulos' defense attorney, Thomas Breen, pointed fingers at Trump.

"The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", Breen said.

Mangiante Papadopoulos responded, "I come from a political background myself".

The court filing also suggested that both Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions approved of his outreach to Moscow, contradicting Sessions' sworn testimony.

Breen told reporters after Friday's hearing that Papadopoulos does not recall telling anyone in the Trump campaign about Mifsud's comments about the Russians having dirt on Clinton.

Papadopoulos has asked the judge for extreme leniency.
