ANOTHER TITLE: Novak Djokovic powers to US Open title

Novak Djokovic won his third US Open title and equalled Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles as he beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the men's singles final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY on Sunday.

Without much trouble, Djokovic held his own and took the Championship in NY for a third time.

Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open on Sunday, the 14th Grand Slam title of his career. From 1-3, Del Potro won three games in a row and had Djokovic rattled.

Novak Djokovic kept getting the ball back, so del Potro would take a bigger whack, trying to find some spot in the corner of the court that would be uncovered.

Four easy holds later and it was onto a tiebreaker that decided the second set, and ultimately the course of the match as Djokovic capitalised on several bad errors from his opponent to win it 7-4.

US Open champion Novak Djokovic and runner-up Juan Martin del Potro have both declared they feel for Serena Williams following the scandal surrounding the US Open women's singles final. But Djokovic was in no mood to hang around, winning the last three games to clinch the crown.

Djokovic tied Pete Sampras for third place on the all-time Grand Slam list with 14. Only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17) have more.

Argentine third seed Del Potro had been seeking first Grand Slam title since 2009.

Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in July, will climb to third in the world after back-to-back Grand Slam victories. "But for me, I felt like I really had to focus during this match because she's such a great champion, and I know that she can come back from any point".

Novak Djokovic was pure class after defeating Juan Martin del Potro.

Del Potro backed Djokovic to surpass Federer's mark of 20 Slams.

At the start of 2017, Djokovic was riding high at World No.2, but Nadal was down at No.9 and Federer way back at 16th. He eventually succumbed to the mounting pressure in the third game as Djokovic looked to take over proceedings.

Just like last night's women's singles final, the match was played under closed roof with rain in NY.

After missing the second half of the 2017 season because of an elbow problem, Djokovic played the Australian Open before having surgery on the joint only for the disappointing results to continue until his quarter-final exit at Roland Garros.

The game went so long that when it ended, with Djokovic holding to 4-all, spectators began leaving their seats, perhaps thinking it was time for a changeover, even though it wasn't.

It was a brief request, though, unlike her many other pleas for quiet, mainly as fans were shouting and chanting and clapping in support of del Potro. Angelique Kerber went from No. 4 to No. 3.

When it ended, thanks to a three-game closing run by Djokovic, he flung his racket away and landed on his back, arms and legs spread wide.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro looked susceptible to forehand errors and Djokovic showed vast courage and quality to take it away from Del Potro, going up 2-0 in the final.

The three-time US Open victor said his hike in France had given him a fresh perspective on life.
