Forecasters said Florence is expected to continue moving farther inland across the Carolinas through the weekend before turning toward the central Appalachian Mountains early next week.

The hurricane is now moving north at around 20km/h, and was expected to slow down today, becoming a tropical storm. "Gradual weakening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Helene is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday".

A wind gust at the Wilmington airport was clocked at 105 miles per hour (nearly 170 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958.

On Wednesday morning, a National Weather Service satellite monitoring the storm recorded waves reaching heights of 83 feet-or the equivalent of an eight-story building.

Top winds were holding at 90 miles per hour - that's just a Category 1 hurricane - but some communities were already submerged in more than six feet of water as the storm drenched the coast. "Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves", the NHC added.

Each storm is clearly highlighted on the map and identified with a name, showing that Hurricane Florence is not the only storm looming.

"This storm will bring destruction to North Carolina", Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday morning.

It is presently located about 965 km east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.

Storm Helene is heading towards the UK from the Atlantic and is separate from Hurricaine Florence, which is starting to hit the eastern United States.

On Sunday alone there will be about two inches of rainfall. Expect winds to increase on Saturday to 15-30mph across the entire CSRA, with the 30mph more likely in the northern/eastern areas.

"It is imperative that everyone follow local evacuation orders", President Trump tweeted Wednesday, along with a satellite video of the mammoth storm swirling through the Atlantic.

Coastal and river communities on the north side of Florence are getting the worst of the flooding as the hurricane swirls onto land pushing a life-threatening storm surge.
