Nissan signs rising tennis star Osaka as brand ambassador

Williams, who took no questions from the audience, said previously she felt she had been treated more harshly than a male player would have been for smashing her racket and arguing with match official Carlos Ramos during her straight-set finals loss to Naomi Osaka of Japan on September 8 in NY.

The issues began during the second set when Serena's coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, was caught giving her hand signals. "It was never a financially motivated decision nor were we ever swayed either way by any national federation".

Serena Williams of the U.S. reacts during the final changeover.

In the aftermath of her defeat, Williams claimed that had she been male, she would have been treated more leniently, but Murray - who won the mixed doubles final alongside Bethanie Mattek-Sands - does not agree.

News of her victory has swept across the planet as she beat Williams in straight sets after the American received a hat-trick of violations for coaching, smashing her racket, and verbal abuse.

As a brand ambassador for the Japanese carmaker, the 20-year-old Grand Slam champion will appear in global promotions and advertising which will support her as a rising tennis star, the company said in a statement.

Mr Ramos then had no choice but to award her opponent a point for Ms Williams' unsportsmanlike conduct.

The six-time U.S. Open champion, who has since been fined $17,000 - to be deducted from her $1.83 million prize - by the United States Tennis Association for the violations, vigorously disputed each during the match.

"I just don't understand ... if you're a female, you should be able to do even half of what a guy can do", she continued.

Williams sits on the board of advisers to Oath, HuffPost's parent company. "Because I feel like since it was my first final, and it was my first Grand Slam victory, overall I felt really happy and I know that I accomplished a lot". I mean, I don't think she looked at me so that's why she didn't even think I was.

There is so much more to the match Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka played, most of it reason for celebration. "I just think, I am me". Adidas especially will benefit from the deal as most of its products are intended for the young people.

Standing on the podium waiting to be handed her trophy and a winner's check for $3.8 million, Osaka heard only boos as an angry crowd took out their frustration on Ramos, who stood to the side.
