Oculus launches Quest standalone VR headset, eyes mixed reality future

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new Oculus Quest, the firm's new wireless VR headset.

Oculus Quest is a standalone VR headset, meaning that it doesn't require a PC or a mobile phone to run VR games and experiences. The Quest headset comes with Touch controllers, and will launch with more than 50 games this spring. Personalize your Oculus Home and use Dash to navigate through a growing library of made-for-VR titles like Echo Arena, The Unspoken, Raw Data, Superhot VR and more.

Zuckerberg said that the new Quest device represents the completion of Facebook's family of VR headsets, which includes the Rift and Go headsets. There are also built-in speakers for those that like a nice, streamlined package.

The Quest is Oculus' play at taking VR mainstream. As we previously reported, the device will ship with Touch Controllers like the ones found on the Oculus Rift, and it features all of the necessary sensors in the headset itself, completely ditching the need for cables (aside from charging, of course).

The VR system supports inside-out tracking, and makes use of four ultra wide-angle sensors for real-time positioning in a virtual world (meaning that you can walk around instead of standing still). However, we haven't yet had the opportunity to try out the Oculus Quest so we'll reserve judgement. That means no wires, no computer connectivity, and no additional components required. That's not to say it isn't fun - but from cable management to proper camera placement, there's a lot of fiddling to get right. The problem is that current VR headsets still have a lot of rough edges.

The advent of wireless VR with higher performance and better visuals is an easy "gimme", except for the overall level of sustainable graphics performance and the inevitable impact on visuals and battery life. At the very least, it offers a simpler, faster way to jump into gaming.
