Toyota on Friday said that it will recall about 800,000 examples of its popular Prius hybrid in the US and about 1.6 million more worldwide over a concern that the vehicles may lose power and stall while being driven.

The latest recall affects several models of Toyota's Prius and its Auris hybrid vehicles produced between October 2008 and November 2014, with approximately 8476 potentially affected cars sold in Australia.

In rare cases they might not enter a "failsafe" driving mode, lose power and stall, the company warned.

When that happens, "the vehicle could lose power and stall".

Toyota is recalling 975,000 cars in the United States for stalling and airbag problems, the company said on Friday. This could cause the auto to stall, which could increase the risk of a crash when driving at high speeds.

Borneo Motors, Toyota's distributor in Singapore, said on Friday it is now in contact with the affected customers and commercial partners to initiate the rectification procedures.

The vehicles involved were also subject to recalls in February 2014 and July 2015 for other reasons.

Some of the cars have already been recalled for a separate drivetrain issue.

Three malfunctions related to the issue were reported in Japan, with no accidents caused. More than a million cars from Japan, 200,000 cars from Europe have been hit by the recall.

Separately, Toyota on Friday also announced a recall covering certain 2018 to 2019 Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia SUVs, as well as 2019 Avalon cars, to fix an airbag defect.

Every year we survey thousands of drivers to find out if they've had any problems with their auto.

In 2016, Toyota announced the recall of 3.37 million vehicles globally over problems with air bags and a fuel emission control unit.
