A 0-0 draw, but Mahrez was not spared for costing his side three points. Though neither side were able to create a clear opening. It's part of football - sometimes you score, sometimes you miss.

Guardiola is the purists' purist - the manager who will never sacrifice the principles forged at Barcelona and put into further practice at Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.

"We played City now very often and they are just outstanding".

Liverpool's boss was happy with the way his team played after a gruelling run of games which saw them play PSG, Chelsea twice, Napoli and Man City in the space of just over two weeks. They are maybe, no, they are the best team in the world in these transitions, offensive, defensive, there is no team better in the world than that. "In that situation they are much better", added the Spaniard.

It could've been a goal and the game could've been over.

"It was a penalty and I said it to the referee afterwards as well", he told Sky Sports. Unlike last season, Klopp could not call on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to penetrate City with runs from midfield due to the former Arsenal player's long-term knee injury lay-off.

That's not how they usually do things, at all, but such are the fine margins this season, it proves how much respect they have for one another.

Their west London neighbors Chelsea have made an altogether more impressive start to the season and remain undefeated with nine wins from 11 competitive games this season.

Algeria global Mahrez blazed the resulting spot-kick over, but City will still go into the worldwide break on top of the Premier League table. Penalty aside, Virgil van Dijk was incredible and the rest of the defence is doing well as well.

The change of position seemed to have a destabilising effect on the 21-year-old, who diverted Lovren's header back to Sergio Aguero in the penalty area.

And with Liverpool heading into the worldwide break level with City and Chelsea on 20 points, Klopp took a positive stance.

It is perhaps understandable they would struggle to deliver the stellar figures they produced last season and there is still plenty of time for them to punish opponents again, but against City they were nowhere near their best. Those sort of moments can go both ways.

It was billed as the biggest game of the season so far but it failed to live up to those expectations as, until the last 15 minutes, both sides appeared reluctant to commit to all-out attack for fear of what the consequences at the other end may be.
