Manchester United come from behind to give under-pressure Mourinho victory

Mourinho's Manchester United team went on to beat Newcastle United 3-2, having come back from two goals behind and Rooney said that the recent run of poor results had reminded him of the hard times during Louis van Gaal's two-year reign at the club.

Mourinho retains the backing of the club's hierarchy despite a report from the Mirror on Friday night that he would be sacked after the game with Newcastle, regardless of the result.

Sportsmail revealed on Monday that United risk losing their best players if Mourinho survives for the rest of the season and the mood around the club does not improve dramatically.

The left back has been criticised heavily by Mourinho over the last two years, but has hit back in the early stages of this season with some of his best performances in a United shirt.

Manchester United's Luke Shaw could be leaving the club next summer. United return to the Premier League action on 20 October against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge; three days later they host Juventus in the Champions League.

Zidane appeared to be the ideal candidate to take over from Mourinho who is under huge pressure following a United's worst start to the season in 29 years.

But the £89m man showed why he was held in such high esteem by the United chiefs, who refused to sell him to Barcelona this summer.

"What Mourinho has to understand is the game has evolved".

The report claims that each player is valued at around £40m, though it's not clear if United are prioritising one over the other or if Mourinho is pushing to sign both. Yes they want to win trophies but you don't need to win a trophy every week.
