England only have one representative on the list in Harry Kane while Gareth Bale is also among the nominees.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are once again nominated for Ballon d'Or award. The award ceremony takes place on December 3.

The last English victor was Michael Owen in 2001, but Ronaldo and Messi have established a stunning stranglehold, winning five each.

While Messi, who last won the prize in 2015, enjoyed another year of stellar goalscoring feats, Barcelona's early Champions League exit and Argentina's failure to make the last eight of the World Cup have likely ruled him out of contention.

Chelsea midfielder Kante was a pivotal figure in France's World Cup success and helped his club win the FA Cup in May.

The first five Ballon d'Or nominees have been named and a number of Premier League players feature prominently on the list.

Sergio Aguero (Argentina/Manchester City), Alisson Becker (Brazil/Liverpool), Gareth Bale (Wales/Real Madrid), Karim Benzema (France/Real Madrid), Edinson Cavani (Uruguay/Paris Saint-Germain).

Real Madrid midfielder Isco, Liverpool's Brazilian Roberto Firmino and Uruguay's rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne are contenders while Liverpool's formidable top three Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were all included.

Five-time victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann lead the shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize, while Kylian Mbappe is the standout in the race for the new Kopa Trophy for young players.

They are joined by Mbappe's France team-mates Hugo Lloris, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane, as well as Croatia star Luka Modric, who won the World Cup Golden Ball.

A panel of journalists selects the Ballon d'Or victor which was first established in 1956 and will this year feature a women's award for the first time.

Sir Stanley Matthews won the first Ballon d'Or in 1956.
