After she urged her fans to vote on Sunday evening, and supported Democratic candidates, the voter registration numbers have spiked, Conservatives are reacting, even Trump commented, and the world has sat up to take notice of this young woman asserting her political voice for the first time.

Referring to the fact the awards were "voted for by the people", Swift said: "You know what else is voted on by the people?", before telling fans to "get out and vote" at the midterm elections. And you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on November 6. - The midterm elections of Nov 6.

The rapper hit the stage to give a festive and colourful performance of her No. 1 hit, I Like It, where she was joined by J Balvin and Bad Bunny, who was wheeled onstage inside a shopping cart.

Cardi B brought the party to the AMAs.

Cardi B won the Rap/Hip-Hop Artist gong and thanked her three-month-old daughter, Kulture.

Migos were acknowledged as the favourite duo in the Pop/Rock category, while Mendes won the Adult Contemporary Artist.

South Korean boy band BTS arrive at the awards. The show will also pay tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died in August.

Other performers included Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Mendes and twenty one pilots.

Some of music's top stars, including Drake, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Kanye West, were absent on Tuesday.

Apart from Swift, the show was largely politics free.

"Black-ish" star Tracee Ellis Ross will host the AMAs, which air live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT.
