Saudi team arrives in Turkey for Khashoggi investigation: sources

A spokesman for the State Department insisted the US government had "no advance warning" of Khashoggi's disappearance.

'I don't like stopping massive amounts of money that's been pouring into our country. "We're demanding everything", Mr Trump said when asked if he was demanding information from the Saudis. He warned that the Saudis could instead buy from Russian Federation or China.

According to one friend, Khashoggi told him "I don't trust them one bit" after a conversation with one such official.

Turkish officials have said that a 15-person team flew from Saudi Arabia into Istanbul on the day Khashoggi entered the consulate, and they have provided information about two private planes that, they say, were involved in the transit of these Saudis. Saudi Arabia denies knowing anything about his fate, saying that he left the building.

Who are the 15 Saudi tourists falsely accused of killing Khashoggi?

Mohammed is a close ally of the USA and has developed a relationship with Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and a White House adviser. He did not elaborate.

More than 20 Republican and Democratic senators instructed Trump to order an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance under legislation that authorizes imposition of sanctions for perpetrators of extrajudicial killings, torture or other gross human rights violations.

Surveillance footage from outside the consulate shows Mr Khashoggi entering the consulate on October 2. "I think the tacit encouragement is worse: It's clear he really does not care about human rights at all, even for American residents", Cohen said.

The letter was written by Corker and Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) of the Foreign Relations Committee and Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. They did not disclose how they were obtained. Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first global trip as president and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales. Lawmakers could also throw a wrench into arms sales that require their approval and demand the US scale back support for the Saudi military campaign against Iran-backed rebels in Yemen.

Corker also said that the administration was not given a heads up about the letter prior to its release to reporters, adding that he was unsure about how Trump might respond given his close relationship with the Saudi crown prince.

There's been a long history of close U.S. -Saudi relations, and those have intensified under Trump.

Trump expressed reservations about withholding arms sales to Saudi Arabia. The administration also relies on Saudi support for its Middle East agenda to counter Iranian influence, fight extremism and support an expected peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians.

"White House National Security Advisor, Ambassador John Bolton, and White House Senior Advisor, Jared Kushner, spoke to Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman yesterday about the missing Washington Post journalist", she said on October 10.

With every day, leaks from the Turkish investigation are drip-fed to the media here - and hope that Jamal Khashoggi might still be alive fades further.

Khashoggi is a resident of the United States and has been living in Washington, D.C. The former editor-in-chief of a Saudi newspaper and then an advisor to Saudi government officials, in the past year Khashoggi had written columns critical of the Saudi goverment in the Post.

"We can not let this happen to reporters, to anybody", Mr Trump said on Wednesday, adding: "We're demanding everything".

The incident has been largely absent from Saudi media, but on Thursday Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq al Awsat cited an unnamed source who said the kingdom was being targeted by "those who try to exploit the reality of the disappearance".

"What you do have evidence of is that the Saudis have been bombing civilians in Yemen for over a year now", he said. "I don't trust him for a minute".
