CNN reports that 15 Saudi nationals visited the consulate the same day as Khashoggi and have since left the country. Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, has not been heard from since October 2 when he visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, amid speculation he was killed by Saudi authorities.

Earlier reports said Turkish police were focusing on 15 Saudi citizens who came to Turkey on two airplanes on the day of the incident.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticizing its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving. Turkish officials allege he was killed inside a Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

Turkish officials later announced that they believed Khashoggi was murdered inside of the consulate and that his body was transported out of the building. He walked into the consulate of Saudi Arabia, his native country, without doubting he would be safe there.

No exact timeframe was given for when the search would take place. Late Tuesday, a bipartisan group of senators wrote to the President, calling for the White House to determine what happened to Khashoggi and whether sanctions should be imposed on whoever was responsible for his fate.

Maria Fernanda Espinosa, who heads the UN General Assembly, supports "an independent and impartial investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance, her spokeswoman Monica Villela Grayly said. "There are other things we can do", he said.

Protestors hold pictures of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a demonstration in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, on October 8, 2018. "Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised, but somehow I doubt it".

OSMAN ORSAL/REUTERS/NewscomNearly a week after the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared, suspicions are rising that the regime in Riyadh has silenced him.

Pressure, meanwhile, mounted in Congress for the Trump administration to address the writer's disappearance.

Trump says in a television interview that "we have investigators over there and we're working with Turkey and frankly we're working with Saudi Arabia".

President Trump has said he'll talk to Saudi Arabian officials about the missing journalist at some point.

Erdogan, whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam, also supported a government in Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia has designated a terrorist movement.

The Saudi request to cooperate with Turkey, which was announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's top adviser Thursday, was a possible sign that the Saudi leadership may be searching for an exit from the crisis as it faces growing global pressure to explain Khashoggi's fate. The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them.

The president also reiterated his opposition to punishing Saudi Arabia by blocking arms sales, which he noted are worth $110 billion to the United States.
