The winning numbers were: 3, 45, 49, 61 and 69, plus the gold Mega Ball of 9.

Friday's drawing will be the game's 25th since the last time the jackpot was hit, when a group of 11 co-workers in California split the $543 million prize on July 24. Those who take the cash will receive a one-time lump-sum equal to all the cash in the prize pool - which is $494 million for Friday's drawing.

The lottery prize is the largest-ever for Mega Millions and the country's second-highest on record, trailing a US$1.586 billion Powerball jackpot that was paid out in 2016.

Mega Millions just keeps getting bigger and better. The chance of matching all six numbers for the Mega Millions and taking home the grand prize is one in 302.5 million. And one of those, sold in San Antonio, had the Megaplier option, available in most states for an extra $1. The next drawing will be Fri., Oct.19, 2018.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Still, even the combined total wouldn't break the record USA lottery prize.

Of course, you could also enter the Powerball drawing on Wednesday.

The average American spends about $223 per year on lottery tickets, according to a survey from LENDedu.

Someone purchased a winning Mega Millions ticket at a Macon Circle K. The ticket is worth $1 million.
