Trump accuses Saudis of 'lies' over Khashoggi killing

She alerted authorities after the Washington Post columnist didn't emerge from the building.

"It's my thinking that MBS was involved in this, that he directed this and that this person was purposefully murdered", Sen.

Jubeir called the killing of Khashoggi a bad mistake and offered condolences to his family.

During an appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press", Sen.

Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Saturday on CNN's "State of the Union" that he believed Prince Mohammed, the heir-apparent of the world's largest oil exporter, was behind the killing.

The Gulf kingdom admitted on Friday that the dissident journalist had died at its Istanbul consulate but claimed that he was killed in a brawl.

"We feel their pain", Jubeir told the USA broacaster Fox. We are determined to find out all the facts. "And what happened subsequent to that".

Investigators hunting for Khashoggi's body have tracked two Saudi Arabian consulate vehicles to separate locations outside the city centre.

Khashoggi's body, the official added, was rolled up in a carpet and given to a "local cooperator" for disposal.

"Why did these 15 people come here? There was no order for a killing".

"First of all, their explanation is insultingly stupid", he told Fox News' Chris Wallace during an interview Sunday, flabbergasted by "the idea that this guy walked in the room with 15 security people, got in a fight and was accidentally killed and then they happened to have apparently an ability to dismember him and get rid of him that happened to be there".

Asked why the government's version of Mr Khashoggi's death kept changing, the official said the government's initial account was based on "false information reported internally at the time". The Saudi foreign minister has since called his death a "huge and grave mistake".

"He was killed in the consulate".

The kingdom has fired five top officials and arrested 18 others in an investigation into the killing - a move that has widely been viewed as an attempt to cover up the Crown Prince's role in the murder.

Reflecting global scepticism over its account, a senior Saudi government official laid out a new version that contradicts previous explanations. An hour later, another Saudi official attributed the death to a chokehold.

They included Maj. Gen. Mohammed bin Saleh al-Rumaih, assistant head of the General Intelligence Directorate; Maj.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he is not satisfied with Saudi Arabia's handling of Mr Khashoggi's death and said questions remain unanswered.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Trump said that "obviously there's been deception, and there's been lies". Still, he defended Saudi Arabia as an "incredible ally" and expressed hope that Mohammed was not involved.

"Nothing can justify this killing and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms", Germany, Britain and France said in their joint statement. "We will ultimately make our judgement based on the credibility of the further explanation we receive about what happened and our confidence that such a shameful event can not and will not ever be repeated".

After Saudi Arabia confirmed his death, she wrote on Twitter in Arabic: "They have taken your body from this world, but your attractive smile will stay in my world forever".

"They told us that he left the consulate", Jubeir said. He adds Saudi officials do not know the whereabouts of Khashoggi's remains.

"Once it became clear these initial mission reports were false, it launched an internal investigation and refrained from further public comment", the official said, adding that the investigation is continuing.
