The kingdom's weeks of denial and lack of credible evidence in the face of allegations from Turkish officials that Mr Khashoggi had been killed in at Riyadh's Istanbul consulate have shaken global confidence in ties with the world's top oil exporter.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said "condemnation is not enough", asking: "Will they now end arms sales to Saudi Arabia?".

"I'm going to know very shortly because I have a great group of people in Turkey right now and a great group of people in Saudi Arabia", he replied. "All of this needs to be explained in all its details", Erdogan said.

Saudi officials have said Khashoggi was killed in a "fistfight" at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, having previously insisted he had left the building.

Khashoggi died at the Saudi consulate in Turkey earlier this month, though the Saudi Arabian government has given conflicting reports on how he died. Some Turkish employees reportedly said they were instructed not to go to work around the time that Khashoggi disappeared. Turkish media reported Sunday that Khashoggi's fiancée has been given 24-hour police protection.

After accepting that US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi died inside its consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, Saudi Arabia has now said that his killing was "a tremendous mistake" and a rogue operation.

Canada passed a law a year ago called the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act, known as the Magnitsky Act, which gives the government the authority to freeze Canadian assets of foreign individuals who are found to have violated human rights. "That is unacceptable to the government".

Asked about the deception already attempted by the Saudi royal family in Khashoggi's disappearance, Kushner said this was just business as usual.

The discovery of the Mercedes came as five more Turkish employees of the Saudi mission testified on October 22.

He said the killing of a journalist was "a big mistake" that would harm relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia and undermine their "united front against Iran".

"For me it would be important that we come to a joint European stance", Altmaier said.

Surveillance footage was aired on Monday showing a man wearing what appeared to be Jamal Khashoggi's clothes leaving the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Trump has also said he didn't want this to potentially spoil the close economic ties between the US and Saudi Arabia, particularly Saudi Arabia's commitment to buy arms from USA companies. "We are determined to find out all the facts and we are determined to punish those who are responsible for this murder", al-Jubeir said in an interview with Fox News.

President Trump had also talked about possible punishment but said he didn't want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia because, he maintained, it would harm us manufacturers. Numbers provided by the stock exchange on Sunday show that Saudi institutional investors were net buyers of 7.8 billion riyals in the week ended October 18, the highest value since June 2017.

"The Kentucky Republican said that there's growing support in Congress to stop selling American arms to the Saudis, even though President Donald Trump says he doesn't want to jeopardize USA defense company jobs".
