One witness posted online: "Me and my partner are staying in Zante, it woke my partner up, and we've had 3 aftershocks much smaller, the larger quake has moved several items around the room".

The Athens natural disaster observatory said it was felt strongly in Zante, a popular holiday destination with its own worldwide airport. The village of Mouzaki is near the popular tourist resort of Laganas. Measurements of quake strength can vary due to the equipment each institution uses and other factors.

The quake sent out tremors felt as far afield as Libya, Italy, Malta, and Albania.

Striking at a depth of 14km, the natural disaster rattled the island and was preceded by a moderate foreshock which registered at magnitude 5.

Local media reported damage caused by landslides and power cuts.

In, Zakynthos strict building regulations protect the earthquake-prone island.
