Turkey has amped up the pressure on Saudi Arabia over the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, demanding to know the location of his body and who gave the order for his killing.

The top Saudi diplomat also dismissed Turkey's calls to extradite 18 suspects in Khashoggi's murder, stressing that they would be prosecuted in the kingdom.

The worldwide outcry over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has become "hysterical", a top Saudi official has said.

Erdogan also said Saudi Arabia's public prosecutor was due in Istanbul on Sunday to meets its regional chief prosecutor.

France and Germany's leaders said on Saturday they want a "coordinated" European position for restrictions on arms sales to Saudi Arabia after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to the French presidency.

"We know a mistake was committed, we know that people exceeded their authority and that we are investigating them", he said. The U.S. has hoped Saudi Arabia can help counter Tehran's influence in the Middle East.

They had first insisted Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, then said he was killed in an argument that degenerated into a brawl.

Saudi Arabia denied any knowledge of Khashoggi's fate for more than two weeks, before claiming he was killed accidentally in a fight at the consulate. It was later revealed that the killing was a premeditated murder.

She said she had not been contacted by Saudi officials and was unlikely to go to Saudi Arabia for any funeral there if Khashoggi's missing body is found.

Khashoggi's killing has severely damaged the heir to the throne, who many believe must at a minimum have been aware of the Saudi operation, which involved several members of his personal guard and other senior officials.

The Saudi FM's comments came in response to a question by Arab News at the first day of the annual IISS Manama Dialogue 2018.

It has also emerged that security cameras were disabled one hour before Mr Khashoggi entered the building, reported Turkish newspaper Yenisafak.

Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, said Friday she rejected an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the White House, deeming it an insincere and self-promoting PR move. Prince Mohammed, the kingdom's de facto ruler, has denounced the "repulsive" murder, denying any involvement.

The U.S. has already revoked visas for suspects in the killing and will be taking additional measures as the situation is clarified, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said in an earlier address at the same conference.

Mattis said that even as the USA moves forward with additional punitive measures in the wake of the murder, it will continue to support a "people to people partnership" with Saudi Arabia, a statement notable for its lack of mention of MBS.

"We have tried to share the information that we have obtained with the public".

But while he has said he wants to get the bottom of the case, he has highlighted the role the Saudis play in the fight against terrorism and as a major purchaser of USA arms.
