Beijing, Oct 26 A woman attacked and injured at least 14 children with a kitchen knife at a Chinese kindergarten in Chongqing on Friday, police said.

Police said that the 39-year-old woman, surnamed Liu, entered Yudong New Century Kindergarten in the Banan district of Chongqing city at around 9.30am this morning and began attacking the pupils.

Staff and the school's security guards struggled to restrain the woman, they added. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers attempting to hit and kick the woman after she was detained.

In another incident a year ago, a man climbed the wall of a kindergarten and knifed 11 children.

Footage posted on social media showed injured children walking to ambulances from the school gate, with some being placed on gurneys.

Police are now investigating and no motive has been given for the attack.

Friday's incident isn't the first time children in China have been hurt at school by people wielding knives.

An undertermined number of students were taken to a nearby hospital following the incident with several having cuts on their forehead, according to local police. Nine students were killed at a middle school in Shaanxi province in April by a 28-year-old man who was later sentenced to death.

In June, a man used a kitchen knife to attack three boys and a mother near a school in Shanghai on Thursday, killing two of the children.

Because China has strict gun laws, attackers often use knives or hammers to harm others, according to the AP.
