Fantasy Football Demaryius Thomas Trade to Houston Opens Big Opportunity for Courtland Sutton

So as the clock ticked toward yesterday's 3:00 p.m. National Football League trade deadline, many names were bandied about, and as the lunch hour hit, rumors of a Texans trade for five time Pro Bowl wideout Demaryius Thomas bubbled up.

As part of the deal, Denver is getting back a fourth-round pick and is swapping seventh-round picks with the Texans (the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the deal). Fellow wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, cornerback Chris Harris, center Matt Paridis and others joined Broncos officials in honoring Thomas upon his exit.

Thomas' departure from the Broncos opens the door for more playing time for second-round pick Courtland Sutton.

The trade means that Thomas will face the Broncos in Denver on Sunday. Last year, Thomas notched 83 receptions for 949 yards and five scores, showcasing his ability to be a top weapon, even with Trevor Siemian as his quarterback. The Broncos shed salary and age by moving Thomas, while allowing the opportunity for a younger player - Sutton - to flourish. The Broncos shipped their longest-tenured player to the Houston Texans, just hours before the trade deadline.

Thomas, of course, was on the hook for $8.5 million this season ($4.5 million of which will be picked up by the Texans), and has a non-guaranteed $14 million base salary for the 2019 season. The rookie had a season-high 78 yards on three catches in the loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. They willfully got a little worse for 2018 in order to get better sometime down the road.
