The member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hanan Ashrawi, condemned on Monday the Israeli bombing of the blockaded Gaza Strip, which left a toll of three children dead.

The children were killed for allegedly attempting to sabotage the border fence and being involved in placing a home-made explosive device next to the fence.

Ashraf al-Kidra, a health ministry official, reports that ambulance personnel are carrying corpses to a hospital, having recovered them from within the perimeter fence that separates Gaza from Israel.

The incident occurred after months of protests and clashes along the Gaza border.

Ibrahim al-Satari, the father of 13-year-old Mohammed, said he couldn't understand it.

Residents said children often go to the border area to plant traps used to catch birds, to forage for food for livestock or tend to crops.

Alon Schvartzer, director of Policy for Im Tirtzu, said that they arrived to show solidarity with the people of the south. Palestinian paramedics say the three bodies were found 200 metres from the fence. "These are small children", he said.

The Israeli air strikes resulted in serious damage to Palestinian military sites, homes and buildings including the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza Strip. Islamic Jihad, which sometimes acts independently from Hamas, was behind the latest rocket fire into Israel, which it said was in retaliation for the killing of four Palestinians during a Friday protest along the boundary fence.

Palestinians and rights groups say protesters have been shot while posing little or no threat.

Several fishing boats also sailed off the northern cost of the enclave, together with the protest on the beach of Gaza close to the border with Israel, which takes place every Monday.

Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters at the Palestinian protestors who attempted to break the naval siege imposed on Gaza strip.
