The Pentagon is deploying as many as 5,200 soldiers along the USA southern border by the end of the week.

His warning comes as the U.S. military is reportedly preparing to send 5,000 troops to the border, a significant increase over the initial estimates of 800 reported last week.

In an interview Monday, Trump said the US would build "tent cities" for thousands of Central American migrants making their way through Mexico to the United States.

But critics say Trump is politicizing the military, deploying them as a stunt to drive Republican voters to the polls without any real national security threat.

Additionally, officials were monitoring another group of about 3,000 people that had gathered at a border crossing between Guatemala and Mexico.

"By the end of the week, we will deploy over 5,200 soldiers to the southwest border", Air Force General Terrence O'Shaughnessy, head of the United States military's Northern Command, told reporters.

"Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border", Trump said.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Friday offered temporary work permits, medical care and other benefits to migrants if they agree to register with authorities and remain in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, far from the US border.

The troops are expected to perform a wide variety of functions such as transporting supplies for the Border Patrol, but not engage directly with migrants seeking to cross the border from Mexico, officials said.

"Right now, we're planning it, how we're going to do it", he added.

In an interview Monday, Trump said the US would build "tent cities" for asylum seekers.

He said the more than 5,200 troops now slated to go to Texas, Arizona and California were only the start of a larger deployment and that eventually troops would go to New Mexico as well.

He is expected to hold 11 rallies in the days ahead of the November 6 midterms, which Washington pundits are characterising as a referendum on his presidency.

The troops will join the more than 2,000 National Guardsmen that Trump has already deployed to the border.

The White House has reportedly been considering a more extensive shutdown of the border, including an executive order that would ban asylum applications by those who reach the U.S. "This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!" But the core group of mostly Honduran migrants has rejected his entreaty and continued heading north toward the US border. The Journal reported that the Pentagon plans to deploy 5,000 troops, mainly military police and engineers. The military troops are meant to assist the border patrol, not engage directly with migrants, several officials said.

Advanced helicopters will enable border protection agents to swoop down on migrants, he said.

The U.S. military has already begun delivering jersey barriers to the southern border in conjunction with the deployment plans. Please go back, you will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process. It remains hundreds of miles from US soil.
