Turkey Says Khashoggi Strangled in Consulate as International Fallout Continues

Bill Gates cancels $5m aid to Saudi following Jamal Khashoggi’s murder

The remains of slain Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi should be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible, the USA said Thursday. After initially denying Khashoggi had been killed, the Saudi government claimed he died in an unplanned "rogue operation".

Khashoggi, who lived in the United States and wrote columns for the Washington Post, went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to collect some documents, but he never reappeared. His body has not been found, although Turkish police last month searched a forest on Istanbul's outskirts and near Yalova, a city near the Sea of Marmara, for Khashoggi's remains.

He entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul a month ago to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage, but never left.

"Despite our well-intentioned efforts to reveal the truth, no concrete results have come out of those meetings", the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office said, adding that it was in this light that it had been "obliged" to share the details about how Khashoggi was strangled and his body "dismembered and destroyed", in accordance with plans made in advance.

When he first disappeared, it said Khashoggi had walked out of the building alive. "The president said we will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime". Ankara has repeatedly called for them to be extradited to Turkey for trial.

Turkey has steered away from publicly blaming Saudi Arabia for the killing.

Saudi Arabia has faced backlash over the death, including from its allies, who have called for answers.

Pompeo told a local radio station in St Louis that the United States had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and said "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino on Thursday called for Khashoggi's remains to be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible.

"It'll take us probably a handful more weeks before we have enough evidence to actually put those sanctions in place, but I think we'll be able to get there", Pompeo said.

He said France was not "dependent on our economic relations with Saudi Arabia" and the country would impose sanctions, but no details were given.

Bin Salman, who in recent years has loosened strict social rules and arrested Saudi clerics deemed "extremists", said in April that Israelis are entitled to live peacefully on their own land.

Earlier, the U.S. called for a swift cessation of hostilities in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been fighting local Houthi rebels.
