Maulana Samiul Haq considered 'father of Taliban', killed in Pakistan

Haq's son, Hamidul Haq, said his father was killed on Friday. He was grievously wounded and died on his way to the hospital. "His guard had gone out minutes before the attack and upon his return he saw my father in critical condition", he told reporters.

Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the "people of Afghanistan will never forget (Haq's) services for them" and his killers were the "enemies of Islam". The number of attackers involved also remained unclear.

President Dr. Arif Alvi has expressed sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of Maulana Sami-ul-Haq.

He said that his father was attacked at his residence by some unknown assailants, who stabbed him. One of Haq's students, Mullah Mohammad Omar, went on to head the US-backed resistance against Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 80s before founding the Afghan Taliban.

Haq was the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania. He added that the West never gave the Taliban a chance to implement its system.

His party has been an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PTI chairman and Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned the assassination of Sami, stating that the country had been deprived of an important religious leader.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, the deputy leader of the Haqqani network, a USA -designated terrorist organization, was one of dozens of Taliban leaders who graduated from Haq's seminary, located in the conservative Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province on the border with Afghanistan. Khan's provincial government in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa donated millions of dollars to Haq's hard-line seminary.

According to his Senate profile, Maulana Sami came from the spiritual family of Akora Khattak, where he was born in 1936.
