A Lion Air commercial plane has crashed in Indonesia

Divers recovered a flight recorder Thursday from the crashed airliner on the seafloor, a crucial development in the investigation into what caused the 2-month-old plane to plunge into Indonesian seas earlier this week, killing all 189 people on board.

The crash killed all 189 people on board and raises questions about the safety of Boeing's new 737 Max 8 model.

"I predict there are no survivors, based on body parts found so far".

The National Search and Rescue Agency said the flight ended in waters off West Java that are 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 feet) deep.

Haryo Satmiko, Deputy Director of the National Transport Safety Committee, told CNN that while the pings had been detected, investigators needed more "technical efforts" to find the exact location of the black boxes.

It is most likely that this black box is the flight data recorder (FDR). Search teams are using an underwater drone, as well as underwater "pinger locators" to try to pick up the sonar signals from the cockpit recorders.

Indonesia's Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi took the unusual step of ordering the temporary removal of Lion Air's technical director and several other staff who cleared the flight, citing government authority over the aviation sector. All people on board are presumed to be dead.

On the night of October 29, a passenger plane crashed near the Indonesian island of Java after a few minutes after departure from Jakarta.

The flight's pilot was granted a request to turn back about two minutes after takeoff, but communications from the plane went silent before it fell into the sea minutes later.

Edward Sirait, the president of Lion Air, has said the company was aware of reports of problems on the flight on Sunday and that a technical issue was "resolved in accordance with the procedures released by the plane manufacturer".

The devices record information about the speed, altitude and direction of the plane as well as flight crew conversations.

As the search has narrowed, divers and Indonesian search and rescue have slowly began to accumulate the evidence of Indonesia's latest air tragedy and the lives it has taken.

Lion Air, Indonesia's biggest budget airline which has been engaged in huge expansion, announced earlier this year it was buying 50 Boeing-737 MAX 10 jets for US$6.24 billion.

Search teams have been retrieving body parts from the water. The country's airlines have previously been banned from operating in the United States and European Union.
