Iranian marchers chant ‘Death to America’ on eve of United States oil sanctions

Open to new deal with Iran: Trump

Open to new deal with Iran: Trump

After unilaterally pulling out of the deal meant to curb Iran's nuclear capabilities earlier this year, the White House said it would reapply sanctions on the country's energy, financial and shipping sectors.

"We will, we expect, have reduced Iranian crude oil exports by more than 1 million barrels even before these sanctions go into effect", he added.

US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the nuclear accord earlier this year, an agreement he called the "worst deal ever negotiated".

Iran greeted the re-imposition of US sanctions on Monday with air defence drills and a statement from President Hassan Rouhani that the nation faces a "war situation", raising Mideast tensions as America's maximalist approach to the Islamic Republic takes hold.

Former Trump State Department senior adviser Christian Whiton on how the Trump administration is going to reimpose all sanctions on Iran that were previously lifted by the Obama administration.

Rohani also vowed that Iran will "proudly bypass" US sanctions to sell oil.

Iran's biggest oil customers - all in Asia - have been seeking waivers to sanctions to allow them to continue buying some of the Islamic Republic's oil.

The move is "aimed at depriving the regime of the revenues that it uses to spread death and destruction around the world", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week.

The US side was unmoved. The two countries have been enemies, on opposite sides of Middle East conflict, ever since.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi also predicted the sanctions will actually work against America's interests.

Pompeo also remarked on President Donald Trump's "sanctions are coming" message, which he tweeted out in the form of a dramatic Game of Thrones-style poster Friday. Al-Shateri said the expected increase in oil prices might offset Iran's loss of oil exports because of the United States sanctions.

The US has been gradually re-imposing sanctions, but analysts say this latest round is by far the most significant.

"When we talk about sanctions, against Russian Federation or any other country, not only the economy but also ordinary people are impacted by them".

"These sanctions have already had an enormous impact", Pompeo said, adding that Trump's policy will be "fully in place" as of Monday.

While now not threatening to resume higher enrichment, in recent months Iranian officials have made a point to threaten that it could resume at any time faster than before.

General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the elite Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force that oversees its operations overseas, responded to Trump's Game of Thrones-inspired tweet on Friday that warned, "Sanctions are Coming".

"Watch what we do", Pompeo said in an interview to Fox News in response to a direct question if the United States has a firm commitment from China and India that they will reduce their intake to zero in six months, the duration of the exemption.

Saudi Arabia is expected to help keep the oil market well supplied, as Iran oil is cut back.

Iranian army Gen. Habibillah Sayyari said both the national army and the country's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard were taking part in the exercise.

It is 39 years since 52 American citizens were taken hostage and held for 444 days after hardline students stormed the United States embassy.
