Authorities have yet to recover the jet's cockpit voice recorder from the sea floor, just northeast of Jakarta, where the plane crashed 13 minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital.

Boeing's warning came in the form of an Operations Manual Bulletin (OMB) directing operators to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AoA sensor. The stock had climbed 24 percent this year through Tuesday.

"We are formulating, with NTSB (US National Transportation safety board) and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator", he said.

It was not immediately clear whether the reported problem stemmed from a mechanical or maintenance issue, nor whether USA authorities would order any checks.

A passenger plane that crashed into the Java Sea on October 29 experienced problems with its airspeed indicators on its last four flights, data from one of the flight recorders retrieved from the aircraft has revealed. The 2-month-old plane went into a sudden dive minutes after takeoff, which the pilots were able to recover from.

The team from Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said that they had arrived at the preliminary conclusions after sifting through details of the flight data recorder (FDR), or black box, which was found in the Java Sea, near Karawang, West Java, last week.

Pilots are trained to deal with faulty airspeed readings.

While modern jetliners primarily operate on autopilot, the computerized system can disengage when airspeed indicators malfunction, forcing pilots to manually fly the aircraft.

American said they had "received the bulletin from Boeing and we are reviewing".

Boeing, based in Chicago, is preparing to issue a safety bulletin to companies operating its new 737 MAX airliners, the model involved in the recent deadly crash in Indonesia, as Bloomberg reports, citing its sources. That is enough to send the plane out of control and cause it to fall to the ground. One of the critical ways a plane determines if a stall is imminent is the angle of attack measurement.

Aircraft and engine manufacturers routinely send bulletins to air carriers noting safety measures and maintenance actions they should take, majority relatively routine.

United said: "We are in receipt of a Flight Crew Operations Manual Bulletin, issued by Boeing, which applies to the 16 737 Max 8 aircraft now in our fleet". Aviation regulators such as the U.S. FAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency often follow such actions by mandating that carriers follow the bulletins.

The Air Current's Jon Ostrower quoted an unnamed industry official as saying the flight crew procedures call on pilots to use the electric stabilizer trim to reverse the downward push, while keeping in mind that the nose could push downward again five seconds after the switches are released. In the early days of the jet age, the elevator trim system was linked to several accidents. Passengers on that Sunday night flight said a variety of issues caused frustration and alarm among fellow travelers.

Alan Diehl, a pilot and safety consultant, said the report that the same problem happened four times and was never fixed suggests that the problem may have been intermittent, making it harder to pin down. All 62 people on board died.
