Trump has already said he's actively pursuing a permanent replacement for Sessions, so it's unclear what, if anything, Whitaker could achieve during his temporary stint as acting attorney general, or how long his tenure will last.

Last month, on Oct 10, The Washington Post reported that Trump had recently spoken with Matthew about replacing Sessions as attorney general. He looked close to tears as he was applauded by the staff on his way out of the justice department building on Wednesday night.

Though the call-to-action was quick, the organization had been building an arsenal of demonstrators for the possibility of Trump ending the investigation for a year.

In an op-ed in August past year he publicly urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the probe - to "limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel". Mitt Romney, who just won election to the U.S. Senate from Utah, also tweeted that the Mueller probe should be allowed to proceed "to its conclusion unimpeded".

Whitaker has made it known that he is hostile to the probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians and the president obstructed justice.

Jerry Role, a retired Department of Justice staffer told Al Jazeera that Trump's actions this week threatened the integrity of United States democracy.

"The president is entitled to an attorney general he has faith in", he said.

Mitt Romney, the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee who won the Utah race on Tuesday to become a U.S. senator, also said Mueller's probe should not be affected by Sessions' dismissal.

Beyond Mueller, but also within the Justice Department's oversight, is a federal investigation into Trump's longtime legal fixer, Michael Cohen, who admitted as part of a guilty plea in August to coordinating with Trump on a hush-money scheme to silence a porn actress and an ex-Playboy model who say they had affairs with Trump.

During a brief stint previous year as a conservative legal commentator on CNN, Whitaker often appeared as a Trump defender, saying he saw no evidence the president colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign or obstructed justice.

Sessions recused himself from managing the investigation because of his own past involvement in the Trump campaign.

Despite it all, Sessions never found himself back in favor with the president.

Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, took over supervision of the Russian Federation investigation. Whitaker, who has been a critic of the Russia probe, now has the power to fire Mueller or curb his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Sessions recused himself from overseeing a probe in March 2017, shortly after taking office.

Some Democrats also considered Sessions too eager to do Trump's bidding and overly receptive to his grievances.

"It's very bad for our country", he emphasized repeatedly. They went after people with loans and other things.

In her tweet, Pelosi, who is likely to become House speaker under the new Democratic-controlled Congress, wrote that "It is impossible to read Attorney General Sessions' firing as anything other than another blatant attempt by Donald Trump to undermine & end Special Counsel Mueller's investigation".
