Florida braces for election recounts, starting with senate race

And now, two days after the election, the race between Gillum and Governor-Elect Ron DeSantis will nearly certainly go to a recount as well.

Gillum's campaign said it's monitoring the situation with an elections lawyer and preparing for a possible state-mandated recount.

If the margin in a statewide race is less than 0.5 percent, the secretary of state, Ken Detzner, is required to order a machine recount.

As of 9 a.m., DeSantis' lead was just 42,948 votes out of 8,189,305 ballots cast - equal to 0.52 percent of the vote.

"Latest ballots dumped by #Broward &/or #PalmBeach...shaved another 4k+ from Scott's lead in Senate race", Mr. Rubio tweeted Thursday. But DeSantis' victory margin has since dropped to.52 percentage points - a mere two-hundredths of a point shy of the recount threshold.

The race for Florida agricultural commissioner was already a tight one on election night, but with new ballot returns, the Democratic candidate has now taken the lead.

The Tampa Times reported Thursday afternoon that the gubernatorial race in Florida is now within "recount range". If such an error is found, the county has to report it to the Department of State within 11 days.If no error is detected, ballots are re-scanned to make sure there was no initial systematic counting error.

Gillum himself took to Facebook Live to address supporters, though he did not explicitly comment on if he hoped to win: "In spite of the fact that we're a little bit down in the numbers, we're hopeful that every single vote will be counted in this race", he said.

County election officials have until noon on November 10 to report unofficial results to the state.

"It has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported", she said in a statement. When those machine recounts indicate the margin is less than a quarter of 1 percent, it automatically triggers a manual recount. But so far, they have only tabulated 665,688 ballots in the Senate race.

That information has to be presented to the voter's county supervisor of elections office by 5 p.m. today.

The Florida senate campaigns were one of the most expensive this election season, with over $96m (£73m) spent in total.

In Miami-Dade, only provisional and overseas ballots remained uncounted. "Nelson is going to be declared the victor", Elias said.

"By releasing information for those who completed a provisional ballot, it may be possible to determine how that individual cast their ballot in specific contests, thereby violating both Florida Statutes and the Florida Constitution with their right to cast a secret ballot", he said. In 2016, there were 24,460 provisional ballots submitted, with 10,998 ballots ultimately being counted, according to the Florida Division of Elections.

Two days after the U.S. mid-term elections, Florida's senate race remains unresolved, along with several others across the country.

Election officials in other Florida counties may have disclosed the identities of which voters cast provisional ballots, however. But Elias said that there were significant disparities even between congressional districts in the county meant the issue could be with voting machines.

Nelson's elections lawyer, Marc Elias, a veteran of prominent recounts around the country, told reporters Thursday morning that he expects the gap to narrow and reach the manual-recount threshold. "The margin may change by a couple thousand, but it's not going to change the outcome of the election".
