And there are some key races to watch in those states, including in Georgia, where the governor's race was among the nation's most-watched midterm contests and generating heavy turnout.

"I'd love to get along and I think after the election a lot of things can happen", Trump said.

"Congressman Peter King of NY is a hardworking gem".

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Representative Dave Brat was trailing Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.

As voters head to the polls Tuesday, nothing was certain.

The party of a first-term president tends to lose congressional seats in off-year elections and Trump's heated rhetoric has made even some Republicans jittery.

"Republicans would likely need to win 23 of the 30 toss-up races to keep their [House] majority", Cook Political Report editor David Wasserman said.

He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

Many Democratic candidates in tight races shied away from harsh criticism of Trump, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like maintaining health insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for senior citizens.

An IPSO poll conducted ahead of the mid-terms found "investigating and potentially impeaching" Trump was the number one priority for Democratic voters. The survey is separate from the traditional exit polls for the television networks. Republicans may just defy the odds and make midterm history.
