"All six of those remains were located in Paradise, and they were located within homes", Sheriff Kory Honea told a news conference.

"There's certainly the unfortunate possibility that even after we search an area, once we get people back in there, it's possible that human remains can be found".

Fire investigators have blamed PG&E equipment for 12 wildfires in Northern California wine country last fall, including two that killed a total of 15 people. That's an area larger than the cities of Chicago and Boston combined.

More than 5,100 firefighters are working the fire with 622 fire trucks, 21 helicopters and 71 water tankers.

The first of the victims of the California wildfires have been named by officials in the north of the state.
