Dead in Separate Attacks on Chinese Consulate, Crowd in Pakistan

Pictures posted to social media purportedly of the attack showed smoke rising from the area.

Local health officials said that at least 30 people were killed in the blast and that more than 50 others were injured, 30 of them seriously.

Pakistan security forces Friday foiled an attempt on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi by three suicide bombers.

According to a local journalist, several Consulates are located near the Chinese consulate in Karachi, including the Kuwaiti and Russian diplomatic mission.

From three to four men tried to enter the consulate and opened fire on the guard standing outside the building.

Khan said in a statement that Pakistan's relations with China could not be shaken by such incidents, calling bilateral ties "mightier than the Himalayas and deeper than the Arabian Sea". China has been developing projects there as part of its Belt and Road initiative.

Two police officers have been reported killed following an attack at China's consulate in Pakistan's southern coastal city of Karachi, according to reports. With more security concerns piling in on the Chinese, the newly elected government headed by Imran Khan will also come under pressure.

In another incident, gunmen shot dead one Chinese national in Karachi in May. Resident there allege that the Chinese-led expansion of the port has stripped Baloch fishermen of their livelihoods, pushed them out of the homes and siphoned off their water supply.

"A high alert has been issued and more security personnel deployed at Iranian and Afghan consulates in Quetta and other important places", said Quetta police chief Abdul Razzar Cheema.

The attack was soon claimed by the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) which said it would not tolerate "any Chinese military expansionist endeavours on Baloch soil".

In an apparently unrelated attack that occurred hours after the assault on the consulate, a bomb blast targeted a Shiite community in Pakistan's remote northwest province, killing at least 31 people.

Aslam alias Achu is a commander of proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), who is being treated at Max Hospital in the Indian capital, sources told Express News on Friday.

Shah Mahmood Quershi described Friday's attack as a "conspiracy" against Pakistan and China, its longtime ally and friend.

Balochistan has accused Pakistan and China of stripping resources from land it wants to turn into an independant state.

New Delhi also said "perpetrators of this heinous attack should be brought to justice expeditiously".

Balochistan is at the center of China's plan to link 70 countries through investment and infrastructure projects.
