Nooses found at Mississippi state Capitol one day before special election

Nooses hanging from trees and hateful signs were found at the Mississippi State Capitol early Monday morning, just a day before a runoff election to decide whether a black man will hold a Senate seat in the state for the first time since 1883.

State Capitol police did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment. The comment has become a major talking point in the lead-up to the state's special election on November 27, where Hyde-Smith faces Democrat challenger Mike Espy - a former secretary of agriculture and congressman who in 1986 became the first African-American to represent MS at the federal level since Reconstruction - in one of the closest senatorial races in the state in recent memory.

The runoff Senate victor will serve the final two years of the six-year term of now-retired Sen.

Earlier this month, Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom posthumously to music legend Elvis Presley.

The sign also read: 'We need someone who respects the lives of lynch victims'. She said she was reacting to a rancher standing next to her who had invited her to a speaking engagement.

The NAACP website says that between 1882 and 1968, there were 4,743 lynchings in the United States, and that almost 73 per cent of the victims were black.

Jonathan Winburn, a professor of US politics and public policy at the University of MS, said he expects the race to be "more competitive than the norm in MS", but said he's not convinced the Hyde-Smith controversy will be enough to deliver her the same fate as Moore. She later apologized "to anyone that was offended".

Another sign noted that MS had the highest record of lynchings between 1882 and 1968 - a statement backed by data on the NAACP's website. The victor will make history in Tuesday's election as either the first woman or first African American elected to the Senate from Mississippi. Thad Cochran's six-year term. It says MS had 581 lynching during that time, the highest number in any state.

Espy is African-American.

Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy attends an event in Jackson, Miss., Feb. 23, 2018.

"She certainly didn't mean that and it was taken a certain way, but she certainly didn't mean it and as I understand it, she's already apologized and very strongly", Trump said.

Hyde-Smith was appointed to replace former Sen.

A spokesman for Pressley said she arrived in MS on Saturday and flew to Washington on Monday morning.
