Trump 'very disappointed' with General Motors after plant closures

General Motors To Close Ohio Plant, Thousands Affected

President Donald Trump said the White House was looking at cutting federal subsidies for General Motors after the largest USA automaker said it would halt production at five plants in North America and lay off thousands of workers. GM Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra is trying to make the company leaner as USA auto demand slides from a record in 2016 and sales in China - GM's other profit centre - are also in a slump. He said he told the company that the U.S. has done a lot for GM and that if its cars aren't selling, the company needs to produce ones that will. GM will also cease production of several auto models, including the Chevrolet Cruze and the Buick LaCrosse. At a rally near GM's Lordstown plant last summer, Trump told people not to sell their homes because the jobs are "all coming back".

GM said numerous USA employees impacted by the plan announced Monday will have the opportunity to shift to other plants where the company will need more workers to support growth in trucks, crossovers and SUVs.

"We are right sizing capacity for the realities of the marketplace" CEO Mary Barra said, adding that the cuts prompted by auto industry changes. That figure was about 50 percent cars just five years ago. Democratic Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, who won re-election earlier this month championing numerous same positions on trade as Trump, said the president has failed to act. They will also close two unnamed factories outside North America. In October, nearly 65 percent of new vehicles sold in the USA were trucks or SUVs.

In a statement, Holden said: "While the vast majority of steps announced overnight apply directly to North American operations, GM Holden continues to support GM's global business objective by implementing its strategy to operate a lean national sales company focused on strengthening the Holden brand and growing sales".

"Today our generation is facing a new Black Monday in the Mahoning Valley", Congressman Ryan said, "GM's announcement is devastating for the men and women working at Lordstown and everyone here in the Mahoning Valley".

The factory announcements likely represented GM's opening bid in contract talks with the union that start next year, said Kristen Dziczek, vice president of labor and industry with the Center for Automotive Research, an industry think tank in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The restructuring announcement also comes after Canada and the USA reached the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, after months of strained negotiations.

GM also is ramping up hiring at its GM Cruise autonomous vehicle unit, pushing to overcome technical challenges and make good on a plan to launch a robo-taxi service next year.

Earlier, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Tuesday indicated that Trump may announce other ramifications for GM. "I am here to protect America's Workers!" he declared.

And, referring to the 2008 federal bailout of the auto industry, Trump angrily continued that "the USA saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get!"

Among the vehicles GM offers is the battery-powered Chevrolet Bolt, which can go 238 miles on a single charge.

The second-largest domestic automaker had already scrubbed plans for a second assembly line in Mexico previous year due to declining passenger auto sales.

Wolikow, 36, who had bought a house two miles from the Lordstown plant, resisted seeking a transfer to another GM facility because he didn't want to uproot his family and still had hopes of returning to work.

In a press release, GM said it will cut 15 percent of its salaried workers and new products will be brought to fewer plants next year. Also, GM imports the Buick Envision midsize SUV from China.
