Hyde-Smith Keeps Mississippi US Senate Seat

Republican Senator Cindy Hyde Smith has won Mississippi’s US Senate runoff election against Democrat Mike Espy

Hyde-Smith on Tuesday defeated Democrat Mike Espy, a former congressman and former USA agriculture secretary who was trying to become the state's first African-American senator since Reconstruction.

Hyde-Smith led former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy (D) by 56 percent to 44 percent with 76 percent of precincts reporting. Thad Cochran. The longtime lawmaker retired in April amid health concerns.

President Donald Trump is congratulating Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith on her election win.

In the final stretch, she portrayed the contest as a battle of ideologies and was aided by President Donald Trump, who visited the state on Monday for two rallies, as well as GOP groups who poured resources in the final stretch to bolster her campaign.

The Jackson Free Press reported that Hyde-Smith attended a so-called "segregation academy", one of hundreds of private schools in MS that were established in the 1960s and 1970s after federal courts ordered public schools to desegregate.

At a November 2 campaign event, Hyde-Smith said of a supporter: "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row".

In the final weeks of the runoff, Ms Hyde-Smith's campaign said the remark about making voting hard was a joke.

A week later, she apologized for the public hanging comment but added that it was being "twisted" and "turned into a political weapon to be used against me" by Espy. But there was no mention of returning the funds before Tuesday's election.

She said of Hyde-Smith's comments, "My culture and my heritage have come too far to endure that".

Hyde-Smith tried to tether herself as close as possible to President Trump, touting her pro-Trump voting record and campaigning in a bus dubbed the "MAGA Wagon". The GOP grew its majority in the Senate by two seats in this year's midterm elections even as Democrats took control of the House.

Strong Democratic turnout - especially among black voters - and an embattled Republican candidate lifted Jones to his surprise victory in Alabama.

The results of Tuesday's runoff finalize the balance of power in the Senate. Her election gives Republicans a 53-47 majority in the Senate, up from their current 51 seats. Republicans defeated Democratic incumbents in Florida, Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota, but lost seats in Arizona and Nevada.

Yet, Hyde-Smith's win and the (relatively small) size of it makes a lot of sense when put in the context of this election cycle.

The big story of election 2018 was how Democrats were able to win over traditionally Republican-leaning college educated voters. She has since touted her conservative stances on issues like abortion, immigration and gun rights.

Espy's camp, meanwhile, painted Hyde-Smith as a candidate who was not accountable to Mississippians and "has rekindled images of the state that most want to leave behind".

During the campaign, Espy touted his federal-level experience - which comes with some baggage. A two-term state agriculture commissioner, the Republican was viewed as the best bet to head off a primary challenger from conservative firebrand Chris McDaniel, a state senator who had nearly knocked off Cochran in 2014.
